I thought they made my mackies sound way better than my firebox does and the gain is about 25dbs louder with out any real destortion. I have a few complaints about the unit. It was quitting logic 8 all of a sudden, something I have never seen happen on my computer. It did this about 5 times, but finally stopped later into the recording, when I was working with the vocalist.
I also was bugged by the inability to change the volume of the headphones and monitors separately. The volumes can only be the same, so if you monitor while tracking someone in isolation, you have to turn down the monitors or keep them the same as the headphone mix.
I am also not feeling the fact that if you want to use a device with a fire wire connect at the sametime and have a macbook like i have, you will need to get a hub because you can not daisy chain. I am also not a fan of the break out cable. It seems like if you want to travel with this machine, you will eventually need to replace the cable.All in all, it blows my firebox out of the water sound wise, but has a lot of functionality issues, or at least with my recording style. It'll take at least 15 minutes to figure out why its not responding, then Hold down your power button so your computer can shut off and reboot, then you can uninstall the VIRAL Maestro Crapware and then it will prompt you to reboot again and then once that has rebooted for a second time, you can reinstall and then it will ask you to reboot for a third time. If you're looking for an interface that works and sounds good, I would go back to PreSonus Firebox. I never should have sold that. I had it installed and integrated with logic pro 8 within five minutes, and it has worked flawlessly ever since. The pre-amps and converters give a wide open sound. If you've got good sounds going in, you'll get good sounds on the other side. I've used this as a D.I. For bass and electric guitar, and with mics for vocals as well with pleasing results.

The Apogee Duet delivers! I use a Power Mac G4 running Leopard. I connected my Apogee after installs and it was immediately recognized by Logic and Garageband. Upon plugging in my bass and hitting a note, 'wow!'
The clarity is amazing on this cool interface. I can really hear the true sound of my bass now, not all muddy and muffled. It's built very well, is surprisingly light and is uber-easy to function. Even looks cool! If you have the mulla and want quality, buy this. Better than every presonus, mackie, m-audio and motu in its class/range HANDS DOWN!

I am use to having hiss because i had a firestudio mobile and let me tell ya. For 500 dollars you cant find a better pre amp and firewire unit for a mac. I love this thing and it is a beast. I am using a gain hungry sm7b and it is crystal clear. If it can handle a sm7 then it can handle just about anything. What are you waiting for. BUY IT NOW!!!!

Fantastic A/D and D/A 24/96 convertors, superb preamps for mics (with phantom power!), guitars, keys and balanced signal line ins (-10 dB and +4 dB) all powered from your computer via a firewire interface.
Imagine taking your Apple laptop and a stereo mic and being able to record hi def 24/96 astounding stereo recordings virtually anywhere! Apple and Apogee have finally done it. The 'killer app' for music. Truly genius. Now they have the baby brother out (The 'One') which is great for people who only record one source at a time.
So with all this greatness, why would a company of this stature only create their audio interfaces for MAC only? Sure, Macs are great and Ive owned several Macs, I just don't have one now and PC's work just fine for me at almost a fourth of the cost. Anyway, if you have Mac then this is a great way to get world-class conversion for peanuts. One guy mentioned the cheap breakout cable failing on him but here is some good advice. Get that custom breakout box made for the Duet by EMT Labs. Its called the 'EMT Labs Duet Breakout' Just google the name and choose the one with mercenary in the name. For around a hundred bucks this breakout box makes the Duet much nicer.

I love the design. It looks freagin tight sitting on your desk. It is really easy to use and works seamlessly with my MacBook Pro. This thing really makes the biggest difference in clarity. Now if you are looking for something that adds some 'color' to your sound, then this WOULD NOT be what you want.
The apogee's pre-amp isn't one made for coloring your sound, it's made to be completely 'color-free'. So you get pretty much EXACTLY what you are hear from vocals or instruments.no coloration. I have used the Ensemble, and they sound identical. It blows my M-Box Pro out of the water, though the M-Box wins in the hardware software integration field, and Logic still can't top the v.8.0 ProTools. This product is innovative and great for space saving. I use it specifically for the A/D conversion, which could put a baby to sleep, warm and clean. Even if you use ProTools predominantly, get this thing to do some tracking (in Logic Express) and work with Pro Equipment for under 1500 Dollars. My only complaint is that I don't like have to keep pushing the big button to toggle through the channel and output controls, and I think the break out cable was a bad idea. I work in pretty cluttered spaces, at times, and having just a couple of extra cables, regardless of how short, can be a big headache, for me. I also think that it was a bit overpriced, but it is made in the USA, so I guess from an ethical and patriotic standpoint, I can feel good about that.Overall, if it died on me, I would check out other (less expensive) options before rushing out to buy another one. Comments about Apogee Duet Firewire Interface: Decided to drop more than pocket change on a serious product and I haven't regretted it. Unfortunately, I got a defective unit which caused some lovely static-type effect. But Apogee email support worked quickly and determined the problem, which ended up with a brand-new unit in my hands. Nice!The quality of this unit will reveal the other weak links in your signal chain.
Never knew how noisy my mics were until I tracked with this little guy. Downside is that there isn't an overabundance of headroom for dynamic sources and there's no effects send/return on the unit itself. Break-out cables are so-so quality. Baby them because they're thin.
But they're still a great, portable solution to having 8 more jacks on the device itself.Overall, a great, high-quality solution for 2-channel recording on the mac.
