So ePSXe is amazing. I can play Final Fantasy Tactics (Thank you, Pointyst-er, Crispy. ) near-flawlessly (no music, dammit!).

But my version of ePSXe (and the various plugins it requires) is old - early 2002 or so. So does anyone (or is an Arsian willing to) make a distribution, with all the plugins and mods and such ready to go? It would make it easier for Dialup users like myself who usually point a broadband-enabled buddy toward it with a link and a blank CDR.

The 'official' site seems to be down. So where can we get a decent distro with all the fixins? Any help here would be appreciated.

I don't know where you got that idea. Plugins tend not to be thrown all into a bundle with it because, well, why increase the bandwidth strain on yourself when it's easier to just let people download what they need? Not only that, but the plugins tend to be somewhat emulator independent (not only for ePSXe) so it wouldn't make sense to distribute them only with ePSXe. Not to mention bundling the SCPH BIOS would bring a host of issues.

In fact the current setup is more or less easiest towards the bandwidth-impaired. None of the individual files are very large, and you only download as many as you need (in other words, until you get it working). Also, a sound issue is most likely an issue with your current sound plugin. Use Eternal's SPU; it works with FFT. Or at least try it.

The thing is, ePSXe uses, iirc, the PSEmuPRO plugin system, which means those plugins are more or less modular. As such you can pick and choose whichever ones work well for you - if you get a frontend like epsxecutor, you can choose different video and sound plugins for different games at will, tailoring it for maximum performance on a per-game basis (which is the only real way to get it to work.) With that said, I use Pete's OpenGL and Eternal 1.30 SPU 99% of the time. The plugin pack isn't very large (3-4 megs or so) but if you want, you can also download the individual plugins in the pack from the links on aldos's page. The current version of epsxe, as everyone has pointed out so far, is 1.5.2. New version is due soon I think.

It's been almost exactly a year since 1.5.2 came out. I've given up on the idea of a new one. Quote: Originally posted by linuxguru: quote: Originally posted by Joon H. Huh: 'So ePSXe is amazing.' EPSXe is the only thing preventing me from getting a PS2! If no such amazing PS1 emulator had existed, I surely would have bought a PS2 by now.Huh If you're not going to play ps2 games then why not just pick up a psone?

I was in a pawn shop earlier today looking for a copy of mario64 and they had (new style) psones for $30. Two words: load time on my PC, load times for the games are almost non existant. And no, I don't sit at my desk to play them - I have my PC hooked up to my HT. All you need is Pete's plugin set(OpenGL, D3D and PeOPS) and Eternal's SPU 1.3+. Then you're pretty much set. Also, a good config loader might be a good idea.

I frequently change games so I find it useful to be able to load different plugin configs on the fly rather than having to tinker constantly. Additionally, ePSXe is still being developed actively, the releases are slow for a variety of reasons but it's the most compatible emulator out there right now. Frankly, I'm not sure what else they could add to it other than some odd random game compatibility fixes.
